Lucknow Gharana Kathak

Listing of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Lucknow

Description
Though Kathak dance originated in temples and Hindu surroundings, it flourished during the reign of Shia Nawabs and kings of Awadh. Gaud Brahmin Kathaks changed the focus of the performance from devotional and spiritual stories to romantic themes, which were a predominant feature in all art forms in the royal courts. Lord Krishna, the Natvar Nagar, being an ultimate icon of love and romance; these dancers combined the two themes with ease. Muslim courtesans, who were expert singers and expressive dancers, followed them with their style of performance, and the combination of the two, male dancers' nritya (body movement) and the courtesans' bhav (expressions) emerged as a distinct new style of kathak.
