Toe ring or 'Bichiya'

The toe ring or bichiya is worn by married women in India. The bichiya is considered similar to the application of sindoor or wearing of a mangalsutra to denote a woman's married state. It is usually worn by women on their second toe. It is mentioned in the Ramayana, thus giving an insight into this ancient tradition.

This pair of toe rings has been in the contributor's family for over two generations, and has been passed down to the new bride.
