Hathkandi Basket made from Ringal Bamboo

Hathkandi basket at Khal village, Chamoli District, Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Made from Ringal (a dwarf bamboo), it is a very popular craft of the Himalayan region, where natural resources form the major livelihood base for the hill communities of remote villages. Forests are an important natural resource in Uttarakhand, providing fuel wood, fodder, biomass and other major and minor forest produce. Ringal, other natural fibres, medicinal and aromatic plants are among the potential resources available throughout the state. A number of communities are involved in dwarf bamboo and natural fibres-based crafts for their survival.
