Mauli

Mauli is a sacred red thread tied on the wrist before the start of any ritual, prayer or religious ceremony in Hindu ceremonies. It is a cotton thread dyed mostly in red and small quantities of yellow colour. According to Hindu customs, it is said that the colour yellow represents spiritual energy and red is used because it has properties to stimulate the spiritual energy. The thread is tied to invoke the spiritual blessings of the deity towards whom the puja ceremony is being performed. It is meant to be worn on the right wrist by men and on the left wrist by women.

It is also popularly believed that this sanctified red thread that is blessed by the deities, protects a person from diseases and evil energy.
