Bahi Khata

Bahi Khata is a traditional form of a book of records written in scroll form. While it has been traditionally used for keeping accounts, Bahi Khatas or pothis of this nature are kept securely in the holy town of Haridwar (and others) to maintain genealogy records of Hindu families and can date back to several hundred years. These are securely kept with 'Pandas' who are Hindu Brahmin pandits who pass this down generationally through the same family which is associated with a particular genealogy. It is customary to register and update this history with details of all marriages, births and deaths which take place through an extended joint family structure.

This family Bahi Khata belongs to the Kapoor family and dates back 200 years.
