Nilavilakku

Nilavilakku is a traditional lamp that is lit during an auspicious occasion in South India, especially in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is commonly lit at temples before the prayer ceremony starts. It is also considered to play an important role in the presentations of different art forms. A Nilavilakku lamp is lighted with the help of cotton wicks doused in oil or ghee.

This Nilavilakku lamp is over 200 years old. It is made out of bronze with a Garuda perched on top and the family lights it annually in the traditional way for the festival of Diwali.
