Family Photograph
Traditionally, in the absence of phone cameras and many people not owning even regular cameras, family portraits were taken in a formal setting in a photography studio. This was considered a momentous occasion to capture generations, usually dressed in their finest. The event also lent itself to a sense of bonhomie and occasion, while documenting a moment in time.
This family portrait is of a Parsi family in Mumbai and was taken in 1921. It documents family members of 5 different generations.
