Banarasi Saree

Banarasi Sarees, amongst the finest sarees in India, are made mostly in Varanasi. They are famous for their fine silk, brocade, and use of zari. Depending on the intricacy and detail, one saree takes from 15 days to 6 months to make. The weaves are inspired by Mughal designs, such as jhallar, kalga and bel. The earliest mention of these saris was in the 19th Century.

This maroon Banarasi Saree (from the 1970s) is from the collection of a royal family of Cooch, Bihar.
