Terrazzo Mosaic Flooring

The Terrazzo mosaic flooring of this 1950s home in North India is typical of its era. Terrazzo flooring has its origins in Egypt and was made popular in India with the British adopting it for many of their colonial buildings. It became popular in India due to the skilled labour and materials available. This flooring is a composite of natural marble, granite or quartz chippings that are held together by a resin or concrete base with a colour pigment added to it. It has a unique speckled look and includes the process of exposing the marble or stone chips on the surface of the concrete and then polishing them till they are smooth. Even though a variety of designs were incorporated in the 1950s and 60s in India, much has been lost of this tradition today.
