Bankura Horses

Bankura horses of West Bengal represent the ancient craft traditions of terracotta. This distinctive style mainly depicts horses with a long neck, and elephants. This craft tradition, patronized by the Malla dynasty of Bishnupur, got a Geographical Indication tag for West Bengal. The Bankura horse is the official crest-motif of the 'All India Handicrafts Board'. This craft is related to the Dharmaraja deity, a form of the sun god. Thus, it is found in many homes, not only as an auspicious symbol, but also as a reminder of our rich cultural pasts and as a fruit of the efforts that have been made to preserve these.
