Aipan

A traditional art form of Kumaon, the Aipan has deep social, cultural and religious significance for the people of Uttarakhand. These beautiful patterns are drawn freehand, using the edge of the ring finger, a technique that evolves with years and years of practice. These patterns are traditionally drawn on surfaces at home, such as entrance doors of the house, the front courtyard, places of worship etc. The base is made from geru (red ochre) and the line work is done using biswaar (rice paste).
