Polki necklace

Our contributor, Ibha Rani, presents a Polki necklace from Bikaner. These were given to her by her mother and are a precious and sentimental family heirloom. The practice of making Polki jewelry started sometime during the rise of the Mughal empire. Polki jewelry was made with only diamonds and without the use of any other precious stones; however, the art has evolved to incorporate other gems such as rubies, pearls, and emeralds. Due to the expansion of the Mughal empire, the reach of this craft has been fairly large and artisans practicing Polki jewelry can be found across India, primarily in pockets within Gujarat, Odisha, and Hyderabad. Polki jewelry is widely used within bridal parties, as with the incorporation of rubies, the jewels appear to have colours complementary to most bridal attire.
