Eeya Chombu (Cooking Vessel)

Although it has now disappeared from most households, eeya chombu is one of the most prized possessions in the kitchen of a Tamil household. This tin vessel is almost exclusively used to make rasam. Using an eeya chombu for making rasam involves intense dedication, concentration, and the careful following of the recipe. Despite the laborious work involved, the aroma and taste added to the dish makes the use of the vessel worth it; in fact, according to most people, it is this vessel that provides the unique south Indian flavour to rasam. This vessel has been carefully kept and passed on for two generations of the contributor's family.
