Bangles Of Firozabad

Bangles are a part of 16 embellishments or 'Solah Shringar' of a married Hindu woman. While the earliest evidence of glass in India has been traced to the Ganga valley culture and Maski, a chalcolithic site in present day Karnataka, the famous city of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh is world-renowned for its exquisite glass work production since the 17th century. The craft is deeply entrenched there, with scores of craft-persons mastering it across generations and passing it on.

The whole process requires great patience and high skills to produce the artistic masterpieces. The 'Churi Bazaar' or bangle market offers the finest of glass, metal, and lac bangles, all beautifully crafted in unbearably hot furnaces. While the city is famed for its glass bangles, the artisans now also create a diverse range of chandeliers, glass toys, vases, and scientific lab equipment.

These glass bangles from Firozabad have been a part of the wardrobe of all the women in the contributor's family.
