Pipli Applique Work

The term 'applique' in textiles and ceramics refers to the technique of an age-old craft of superimposing embellishments like mirrors or fabric on a large base fabric. This hereditary craft originated in a town in Orissa known by the same name, 'pipli'. The annual 'Rath Yatra' or Chariot Festival is held in the famous, religious, town of Puri. The chariots bear the triad of deities, Lord Jagannath, Subhadra, and Balabhadra. The canopies of the chariots are adorned with beautiful and vivid Odiya applique work.

This colourful wall hanging was brought as a souvenir from Orissa in 1991.
