Sikkimese Family Photograph

The Sikkimese family of Mr. Chhumbay Tshering and Mrs. Zamkit Lhhamu were patrons of the Dhochu Monastery in Darjeeling. In this family photograph, they are gathered in front of the monastery on Losar Day, the Tibetan New Year, which is celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar Tibetan calendar. The women in the picture can be seen wearing their traditional outfits, which are known as bakhu, a traditional cloak-style garment that is fastened at the neck on one side and at the waist by a belt. This is accompanied by the wonju (blouse) and the pangden (an apron worn only by married women). The women are also adorned with the khao, a necklace made from gold, turquoise, or coral.
