Japanese Umbrella (Part 1)

Japanese umbrellas are also known as Wagasa. These are conventionally made of washi paper after greasing it and using oil to paint traditional or floral designs on it. These umbrellas are used often during the dance ceremonies of the geishas as well as on special occasions like weddings.

This is a Higasa variety of Japanese umbrella which is also known as the Japanese Parasol. The shade is made of oil-paper and the handle and the scaffold is made of bamboo. This particular variety is not good for the rainy season and is mostly used for protection from the sun. This is a seventy year old umbrella that was brought as a souvenir from Japan by the contributor.
