Tanchoi Silk Sarees

Tanchoi is one of the most complex weaving techniques in India. The background of the Tanchoi silk saree has a satin finish and at times even zari work. The designs on these are mostly floral motifs or birds and animals. These sarees are famous for the minutely detailed and intricate work woven on them. It is believed that Tanchoi silk was brought to India through Chinese traders in the 19th century, which was later adapted to suit the preferences of the Indian weavers. While some also believe that it was introduced into India by three Parsi merchant brothers who travelled to China in the 19th century. It is said that they were so impressed with the weaving technique and the quality of the silk that they learnt it and when they returned to Gujarat, they innovated and worked on it to suit the Indian taste.

This 50 year old Tanchoi silk saree was a part of the wedding trousseau of the contributor. This maroon and silver colour saree has intricate floral motifs on it and also has silver zari work on the borders.
