Kashmiri Papier Mache Box

Papier Mache/Paper Mache is one of the famous handicrafts of Kashmir that dates back almost to the 14th century. Made of paper pulp and with naqashi work, it uses design elements like flower and jungle motifs, geometric patterns, and Kashmiri symbols like almonds and Chinar that are painted on it. They are mostly available in Srinagar city as well as in other parts of the Kashmir valley. This art form is mostly used to make utility and home decor items. It became popular during the Mughal era.

This is a fish-shaped Kashmiri Papier Mache box made of white silvery paint and colourful floral motifs. It is almost 50 years old and was bought by the contributor from Srinagar, Kashmir, during a visit.
