Victorian Coins

During the period of the British Empire, different presidencies under the East India Company had separate coinage systems. Since 1835, imperial issues had followed a uniform pattern and usually bore the name of "Victoria Queen". However, after the revolt of 1857, when India was passed to the direct suzerainty of the British crown and Queen Victoria undertook the title of the "Empress" after the Royal Titles Act, 1876, the imperial coins underwent a transformation and now bore the impression of "Victoria Empress".

This is a silver Victorian coin from 1879 that has been with the contributor's family and has been passed down generations ever since.
