Madurkathi Mats

Madurkathi mats or Madur are mats woven in Medinipur district of West Bengal from a specific type of reed called Madur Kottir. This mat forms an important part of the rural economy and is one of the prime cottage industries of this region. They are primarily woven by women on a simple bamboo frame, with a warp of cotton thread. Madurkathi mats formed an integral part of the social fabric of rural Bengal since the time of the rule of the Nawabs in Bengal. These mats are popularly used to sit on, and as bedding.

These mats belong to a family that originally belonged to Medinipur district. These mats have been used for over three generations now.
