Marble Jewellery Box

Marble is one of the most cherished and precious stones used for crafting. White marble stone from the Makrana stone quarries of Rajasthan was extensively used by the Mughals for the construction of various monuments. It became a stone of choice for Mughal Emperors, especially during the reign of Shah Jahan. Agra in Uttar Pradesh is famous for its stone cut craftwork. One of the most popular forms is the Jali work or stone tracery which includes fine filigree of marble that incorporates intricate floral and geometric patterns. This particular decorative style of stone tracery was introduced in Agra by the Mughal Emperors on a large scale, so much so, that now marble stone craft is the basis of this city's architectural heritage. The majestic marble carving and inlay work of the Taj Mahal can be seen in the smaller and commercial craft work items available for sale in the city.

This is a white marble jewellery box with Jali work on it which is almost 20 years old. This was brought from Agra as a souvenir by the contributor.
