The Gotipua Dance Archive

The Gotipua Dance Archive by Dance Routes in collaboration with the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) division of Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) presents a detailed view of traditional life within rural Gurukuls in the pilgrim town of Puri in Odisha. It delves into perspectives on Odissi and Gotipua and its developments, with rare photographs, audio-visual footage of Gurus & Artists.

Part 1 of the archive, The Children of Jagannath, is a video-documentary outlining an INTACH sponsored initiative to create a mixed media performance during the years 2005-2007 with Gotipuas and Pattachitra artistes living in the village of Raghurajpur, Odisha. This initiative was later supported by the Ford Foundation, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Part 2 is a curation of video interviews that are an eye witness account by eminent Oriya artists of how folk Gotipua resources were ‘classicised’ for the creation of Odissi dance, using melodic, rhythmic and movement elements principally from the Gotipuas.

Part 3 contains the complete interviews, from which the excerpts in Part 2 are drawn, and includes details of all the contributors and an account of their lives.

Part 4 is a library of photographs of the Gotipuas and their environment, and spans the time between 2005-2015.
