Description
According to the traditions of the Porja community, the dead are either cremated or buried. Usually children below 18 years of age are buried and all others are cremated. Various rituals, including ancestor worship, are observed. After washing the dead body, castor oil and turmeric paste is applied to it, and it is wrapped in new cloth. It is placed on a bier made from green bamboo poles. The bier is carried by sons, brothers or male relatives. Everyone accompanies the procession till halfway to the burial or cremation ground, after which children and women are sent back to the village.
