Tattooing as Folk Tradition among the Apatani, Arunachal Pradesh

Apatani Tribe (Arunachal Pradesh);Community

Description
Tattooing is a popular and common traditional practice amongst the Apatani for both men and women. It is a part of group identity formation. Apatani women have a long line tattooed from the forehead to the nose tip, and five smaller straight lines on the chin called Tüpè; these tattoos are typically done by the elder women of the community on young girls. The Apatani men have a small T-shaped tattoo on their chins. Back in the days, tattooing was more of a social obligation than a personal choice.
