Apatani Tribe (Arunachal Pradesh);Community

Description
Amongst all the festivals of Arunachal Pradesh, Dree is one of the major traditional agrarian festivals celebrated by the Apatani. Every year, this festival is celebrated from the 5th to the 7th of July. The significance of this festival lies in the invocations to ensure protection of the paddy from natural calamities (rain, hailstones, and storms), insects and wild animals. It is celebrated for the well-being of the clan members and their livestock. The word Dree is derived from the Apatani word Diiri, which means purchasing or borrowing of food items in times of scarcity or adding to the existing stock in anticipation of lean days.
