Yakshagana: Unique Features

The Ramayana Project

Description
Unique Features of the Yakshagana Presentation

Depiction of the character is central to Yakshagana. Possibly the most well-known and respected artist of Badagu Tittu style of Yakshagana today, Keremane Shivananda Hegde comes from an illustrious family of Yakshagana artists. He says that, in a story, if there are two characters—Rama and Ravana—there is no concept of a villain, but there is a concept of a Pratinayaka, who has many dimensions to his character. Yakshagana allows a negative character like Ravana to justify his actions. There is some argument, and some statements to prove that he is not completely wrong. This feature of establishing the character after much debate is acceptable to the viewer. Establishing the essence of the Nayaka and Pratinayaka is a big challenge for any actor.

Yakshagana has attracted people from all communities. There is no caste or hierarchy in Yakshagana. That is why it is one of the most secular art forms of India.
