Snacks at Kumbh

The Ganga Project » Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh

Description
The Kumbh Mela is seen as one of the largest religious procession in the world. For most it means chanting of hymns and prayers, getting closer to their deity and ridding oneself of all their past sins by taking the holy dip or 'snaan' in the holy river Ganga. However, the local inhabitants of Prayagraj (Allahabad) view this religious festival with a different light. They see it as a place of trade and commerce, a place to earn a mighty livelihood. The pilgrimage of the vast number of tourists brings in a large portion of the revenue for the city and allows the city to continually host the Kumbh. Food vendors find a boost in their turnover as the multitude of participants, from the foreigners to the saints, all relish the various snacks available at the Kumbh Mela. The food culture at the Kumbh spans over savoury hand foods like the popcorn and the ever-westernized burgers and hot dogs, to the traditional sweets made out of besan. Such a mix allows for a wide variety of food and snacks that caters to all.
