Description
Idol worship as a culture is deeply entrenched in India. One of the cities, Prayagraj (Allahabad), finds this idol culture not only as a way of worship but rather also as a daily means of sustenance. The city is widely known for its religious voracity and the need for idols or murtis is satiated by a large number of sculptors who are busy sculpting away at their workstations making beautiful gods and goddesses out of clay and terracotta. Idol making as a profession has also found a surge of growth because of the annual festival of Kumbh Mela, which is the biggest gathering of Hindus all over the world. Kumbh Mela commemorates the victory of the Hindu gods over evil. The artists find themselves to be experts in making the various Hindu gods and goddesses. A unique feather to their cap is the Ganga Idol that is highly venerated in the region. Shown here are the various tools and instruments used by these sculptors to make the idols
