Veni Daan

Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh

Description
The Kumbh Mela witnesses numerous Hindu rituals and customs, some more unique than others. One such ritual is the Veni Daan, performed only at the Sangam, particularly by Hindu couples from the Maharashtra region. The rites of a Hindu wedding are repeated during Veni Daan, in the hope that a long and happy marriage may be ensured, and the commitment of togetherness in saat janam (seven lives) be reinforced. A very poetic custom during Veni Daan is the sacrifice of the braid. The husband combs the wife’s hair and braids it. A third of the braid is then cut off and offered to the Sangam waters.
