Members of the Nishad Community in Prayagraj (Allahabad). Nishad - is a very old word which traces its existence to the Vedic era. The root meaning of Nishad is ‘someone who ushers.’ In local language it was called Kevat, Mallah etc. and these people used to row boats and transport people and goods through the waterways. The Nishad community is believed to be one of the oldest communities in India who used to dwell in the dense forests. It is believed that after coming into contact with various other communities there were cultural exchanges. They used to build boats and nets and were indulged in fishing activities, which was also one of their means of livelihood.
