Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh

Description
The Kumbh Mela is seen as one of the largest religious procession in the world. For most it means chanting of hymns and prayers, getting closer to their deity and ridding oneself of all their past sins by taking the holy dip or snaan in the holy river Ganga. However, the local inhabitants of Prayagraj (Allahabad) view this religious festival with a different light. They see it as a place of trade and commerce, a place to earn a mighty livelihood. The attraction of the vast number of tourists brings in large portion of the revenue for the city and allows the city to continually host the Kumbh. The festival witnesses a herd of sellers selling small whimsical items like fans, flutes and masks. These titbits act as souvenirs and add a playful nature to the otherwise intense religious festival. It also caters to the tourists who have come to witness the festival for its sheer magnitude rather than pure piety.
