Kalpavaasi

Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh

Description
Kalpavaas is one of the most significant rituals during the festival of Kumbh, it is understood as a way of spiritual growth. The kalpavaasis practice this month-long ritual in hopes of freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth. They set up camps near the Sangam and offer their prayers to the holy river of Ganga. They take a ritual bath or the snaan daily to clear away all the remnants of past sins and perils. The kalpavaasis are known all over for their strict rules and obedience. The kalpavaasis are supposed to follow certain rules like the satyavachan (honesty), brahmacharya (practice of celibacy), vrat (fasting), dev pujan (praying to the gods), satsang, giving alms, etc. The devotees thus lead a very simple life, away from the usual busy schedules. They concentrate only and only on religious matters for the kalpavaas period.
