Mrs. Kitoli Naje on 'Tradition and customs in time and space'

Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
Mrs. Kitoli Naje spoke about the urgent need to foster tradition and customs in a space, and at a time, when youngsters are forgetting their traditions and customs. Observing such pattern among the youngsters, the Sumi Women’s Association, Nagaland, organised a seminar to initiate the revitalization and safeguarding of their indigenous customs and traditions. As a part of this initiative, Mrs Naje visited the Pitts River Museum at Oxford University, London, in 2012. The outcome of the seminar and the museum visit was the compilation of a book providing detailed description of traditional Sumi clothes and motifs. In order to acquaint the community-weavers with the traditional style of weaving and production, pictures (source: Pitts River Museum) of the traditional wrap-arounds and shawls were distributed, and they were asked to reproduce the same cloth and design. The Association has a follow-up plan to start a community crafts museum. Although, the lack of support and resources to set up such a museum is a matter of concern, she remains hopeful that the youngsters of her community will do their bit to value, own and wear their traditional dress, as a step towards maintaining traditional clothes for the next generation.
