Description
Mr. Gourachandra Singh (Left) shared his experiences as the founder of the People’s Museum in Manipur, the challenges faced by him in the process of collecting and procuring the collections. He has dedicated 45 years of his life in going around villages, collecting arte-facts and objects from community members, and slowly progressing towards the creation of a museum, which, initially, wasn’t a part of his planning. What remained constant and clear was genuine interest in preserving his local culture, despite being misunderstood and suspected by his community people as a person pursuing selfish motives. He recollected how, due to the lack of means of transportation during his time, certain important documents and arte-facts could not be preserved or protected. In order to get people interested in his collections, he began sharing his collections and knowledge with scholars and research enthusiasts. Stressing on the importance of preserving such rural museums, he urged scholars to extend help in conservation and promotion of such spaces.
