Mr. Bipin Debbarma on 'Heritage and caste politics'

Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
Mr. Bipin Debbarma began his presentation by singing a traditional song from his region (Tripura). He said that the preservation of heritage, specifically the art, culture and literature, is strongly related to, and significant for caste politics (Jaatisatta). Talking about the pivotal role that the elders, especially the women of Tripura are playing in the preservation of their culture (as majority of the cultural artefacts are in fact produced by them), he urged that the government needs to plan outreach programmes/workshops for increasing production in this domain, before these practices slowly fade away. He emphasized the need to include history, art and culture as subjects in school curriculum, especially regional histories, and create awareness with the help of exhibitions and mobile museums. According to him, the government should take more responsibility in these sectors and promote inter-generational transfer of knowledge.
