Dr. Bina Gandhi Deori on 'Galo folklore'

Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
Dr. Bina Gandhi Deori presented a paper on Galo folklore, with a focus on West Siang in Arunachal Pradesh. These ethnic communities have a rich repository of cultural heritage which are mostly intangible in nature, and transmitted orally to the next generation. Their traditional beliefs and rituals are reflected in the folk songs, and the various forms of folk songs are categorized according to the ceremonies like origin of cultivation, mithun, marriage, migration and some unusual topics like the beginning of leprosy. These songs are not just meant for merriment, they are expressions of collective memories of the community in the form of collection of myths, legends and stories related to their past. She expressed the fear of such significant form of intangible cultural heritage losing out in the face of fast urbanization, and the new generation being unable to relate to it anymore.
