Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
Dr. Archana Shastri’s (sitting on extreme left) presentation talked about the transitions and transformations in material and visual representations in the regions of Northeast India. It traced the various distinct identities as rooted in their environment, integrally related to their world view and way of life, elucidating on the key visual elements and specialized skills towards the formulation of a visual language as an expression of their collective experience. With the shift in the historical, social, cultural, economic and political structures, the perpetuation of cultural narratives and memories is no longer confined to the preserves of the ritualistic or the traditional belief systems. Shaped by newer needs, production processes and patterns of consumption, there is an imminent shift in the cultural biosphere of the region. Focusing on the distinctive typology and material culture of the region, the presentation attempted to map the embedded memories as well as points of evolution, transition or departures.
