Dr. Erik de Maaker, on Border themes

Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
Dr. Erik de Maaker, under the theme, ‘Marginal Zone or Borderland? Ethnographies, Histories and Politics in North East India’, described how the northeast of India as part of the larger region, fosters comparisons and encourages identification of common trends, for example, looking at how nation states differentially treat communities within borders, as well as the assertion of identities along borders. He discussed the impact of ethnographic imagination for communities. By utilising these insights to explore the analytical frameworks used to approach northeast India as a borderland, one could develop new perspectives on society, history and state.
