Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description
His paper focused on the role of Zhuang, a Tai-speaking community of southwestern China. Scholars and community elites as cultural producers, promote Zhuang oral traditions, such as religious chanting of songs, prose, tales about Buluotuo into the statesponsored Buluotuo Cultural Festival, which is organised in Tianyang County, Guangxi. The paper described the journey of Buluotuo culture from almost nearing extinction due to massive destruction during the Cultural Revolution, to its revival and a subsequent growth in its popularity in the 21st century. Information technology played a crucial role in promoting and popularizing this culture. The paper also discussed how the cultural images and meanings of Zhuang identity are embedded and embodied in the Buluotuo worship festival. In addition, a variety of Buluotuo folk stories are used as tools by the local people to negotiate with the authorities for a better share of the market.
