Dr. Roslinabinti Abu Bakar, on Pantun Malay folk tales

Oral Traditions: Continuity and Transformations, Northeast India and Southeast Asia, Shillong (1st-4th February, 2016);Conference

Description

Pantun is a form of speech and poetry that is still used as a form to communicate, and is central in Malay oral expression. Rhyme is used as a part of its technique and format.

She spoke about the kinds of themes brought out through Pantun poetry: ideas about courtesy and etiquette and beauty (referring to a particular Pantun – ‘Hajat Tak Sampai’ by Ali Badron). Beauty has two meanings; the explicit beauty is conveyed through the description of natural imagery, whereas an example of implicit beauty is reflected in the good upbringing, which can significantly alter a person’s behaviour. Fantasy is also used as a way of alleviating grief and sorrow. The Malaysian government is putting dedicated efforts into preserving the oral performative form of the Pantun.
