Ms Kelhouvinuo Suokhrie presented a case study of the Angami Naga, with a view to integrate oral narratives in linguistic study of speech communities. She talked about the importance of integrating oral narratives with linguistic findings, as reported in Angami of Kohima village, Nagaland.
Upon the exploration of language variations in marriage practices between different clans within the same village among the Angami community, certain similarities were noticed with clan-based society of the Sui community in Southern China, and how marriages have implications on language practices. While sharing the social background of the Angami community, she mentioned that though marriage practices are changing, it is strictly clan-based society which practices exogamy. The oral narratives obtained through socio-linguistic interviews have greatly contributed not only to the understanding of the present clan structure but also the past mobility.
