‘The Ganga as it flows’ by Professor Pushpesh Pant, Part-2

Gyan-Pravaha

Description
The talk continues with the flow of the Ganga being traced from Prayagraj onward by Professor Pushpesh Pant. He talks about the importance of Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj; a confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, where the river Saraswati is taken as invisible, which is a debatable issue. However, Saraswati symbolically represents the Goddess of Knowledge, which is important for any kind of liberation. The river Yamuna is related to Krishna and Ras Leela; Ganga has religious and spiritual connotations attached to it and is also associated with the welfare of mankind. Professor Pant talks about the changing names of the Ganga; the activities during the Kumbh festival except for the aarti, which is absent, unlike in Haridwar and Varanasi. The role of the Ganga as a mode of transport is also brought in; bridges were constructed from Akbar's time onwards (some before it), as trade flourished only with the flow of the Ganga. Baburnama also contains a description of the river Ganga. The ghats were imagined by various painters and historians like James Pricep who was the first to do so. Finally, the river flows to reach the mangroves and the sea near Sagar Sangam Dweep. Professor Pant again stresses on our responsibility to conserve and preserve this holy river.
