Listing of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Lucknow

Description
Lucknow Kathak style evolved as a distinct form during the time of Wajid Ali Shah but the Kathak current form owes its existence and style to the combined creative genius and talent of Kalka-Bindadin, sons of Durga Prasad and the grandsons of Prakashji, whose son Thakur Prasad is said to have achieved the position of Wajid Ali Shah's guru and was given a seat of honour at par with the king's throne. Bindadin had created more than 1500 thumris of which many are lost, but a large number have been preserved through generations and are still an inseparable part of almost every Kathak performance. His brother, Kalka Prasad, another genius of the Lucknow Kathak Gharana, had three sons, Achchhan Maharaj, Lachchhu Maharaj, and Shambhu Maharaj, who diversified this dance form, including in films during the 20th century.
