Description
This document contains details of the origins and historical evolution of the people of the Palani hills (spread across approximately 1000sq km, are a mountain range in Tamil Nadu. They are a part of the Western Ghats and are divided into lower Palani hills and upper Palani hills), as separate and distinct communities with specific livelihood and sustenance strategies, their heritage and traditional practices. The focus of this study is on their intangible cultural heritage. The communities featured here include the indigenous Paliyans and Puliyans, and the Mannadiars, Arunthathiyars, Aasaris, Telugu Chettis, Pirimalai Kallars, Srilankan repatriates and others. The duration of evolution and the changes developing within the communities has been in kept in mind during the documentation, by INTACH's Kodaikanal Chapter.
