A culturally abundant region, Braj—also known as Brajbhoomi—falls on both sides of the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh, and includes some areas of Haryana and Rajasthan as well. Considered the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the entire landscape is dotted with, and socialized by, the Krishna mythology. It is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. The most popular cultural expression of this region is seen in the events around the ‘Braj Ki Holi’ festivities, for which devotees arrive in large numbers to join the local revellers.
